Depending on the home, a lot of people under one roof can sometimes feel cluttered and busy.

That lack of elbow room when sharing a space, or privacy when looking for time alone, can diminish the experience of spending time at home.

Design considerations in models such as the Bishop 2.0 make large family living enjoyable, balancing togetherness with needed elbow room.

This front-drive single-family model by Mattamy Homes is displayed as a show home in the Airdrie community of Southwinds. Accessed off of 8th Street on the south end of the small city, the community provides its residents quick access to Highway 2, a meaningful attribute for people who commute to Calgary.

The home has five bedrooms above grade, with four on the second floor and one on the main. Its main level sleep space makes sense for households that include elderly relatives, such as grandparents. This access to parts of the home that support their everyday needs on one level allows them to avoid regular use of stairs.

To that end, the main level bedroom boasts an ensuite with a shower.

On the second level, the primary bedroom, sometimes called a master, is designed with privacy in mind, not sharing a wall with any other bedroom. It reaches a generous 12 feet five inches by 16 feet two inches and features both a large ensuite and walk-in closet.

All second level bedrooms in this home have a walk-in closet.

The main attraction in the master bedroom ensuite is a luxurious and well-sized shower with full-height tile and a glass door. Other features include a free-standing tub beneath a window and a spacious vanity with two sinks. There is plenty of room between the sinks, allowing both members of the couple to get ready for their day at the same time without feeling crowded.

In the full bathroom on the second level, there’s also a vanity with two sinks, letting more than one child in the family use the space at the same time, freeing up time on busy weekday mornings.

Anchoring the second level is a spacious loft, or bonus room. The way this area is staged in the show home makes it is easy to envision how functional it can be.

In addition to a TV and couch, there’s shelving and two desks, making it a handy homework hub.

A glass railing on the stairs to the second level support the spread of natural light. The primary source of this sunlight comes through windows on the rear facing wall, where the great room, dining area and kitchen are found.

The kitchen supports use by multiple people at the same time with its substantial island.

It has seating for at least three people but room for several others to gather around it. To that end, there are long stretches of counter space, boosting options for food preparation.

The kitchen is L-shaped and can be accessed from two sides, assisting with circulation. It is shown with appliances including a wall oven, fridge with french doors, and chimney-style hood fan.

In the great room, the focal point is a box-shaped fireplace surrounded in full-height tile.

The positioning of the dining area allows home owners to use different table sizes depending on their needs. Large families, for example, can comfortably fit a table that is above-average in proportion without sacrificing neighbouring spaces.
