More than margaritas and tacos: Baja Sur cuisine is nuanced and highly creative

There are no chain restaurants in Loreto, Baja Sur, save a Subway outlet, which is only recognizable by its grean and yellow branding. There is no sign save two arrows.

A trip to this charming town means indulging in traditional dishes such as pozole, the ubiquitous ceviche, aguachile, chocolate clams, flank steak and, of course, tacos.

The dishes are a riot of colour and flavour, always served with an accoutrement of sauces and additives.

It’s hard to just choose a few dishes from a weeklong trip to Loreto in the Baja Sur, but here are some standouts.

salad
With million-dollar yachts anchored in the bay, you know the food at Las Brisas in Puerto Escondido marina is going to be good. It has an international menu with wood-fired pizzas, burgers and a beautiful Caprese salad.

Many of the beaches between Loreto and Mulege have restaurants serving fresh grilled whole fish and shrimp.
